                      Gilbert Newton Lewis, born in Massachusetts in 1875, is arguably one of the most influential figures in all of chemistry today.  Lewis had very little public schooling early on in life, but quickly excelled at academics, entering the University of Nebraska at age fourteen.  By age twenty-four, Lewis had been awarded his PhD from Harvard.  Lewis ended up teaching at the University of California at Berkeley.  He usually focused his attention on the more brilliant students he encountered.  His research led to his theory of the shared electron pair, which went against the belief that an electron completely transferred from on atom to another.  Instead, he proposed that two electrons, one from each on the bonded atoms were shared to form what is commonly known as a covalent bond.  Lewis also believed that electrons on an atom paired up around the nucleus, usually in a tetrahedral arr
